At night, an inversion layer forms over the Valley. As with any desert, the air closer to the ground cools faster than the air above. What happens to this cool air? It then moves in on top of the warm air westward from the surrounding mountains. As a result, the air trapped closer to the ground in the Valley, the air containing the majority of the pollutants in the area then spreads. “As the desert floor heats up during the day, the particulates rise forming a visible haze that expands as the day progresses. Throughout the day, air shifts in the Valley cause variances in the Brown Cloud. From mid-day on, the cloud is pushed to the east. With every sunset, the cycle starts all over again”.

Light - Place it near a sunny window. South, east or west facing windows are preferable to a north facing window. Poinsettias are tropical plants and will benefit from as much direct sunlight as you can provide.

Water - Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Simply feel the surface of the poinsettia with your hand. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don’t let the plant sit in water. It is best to water in a sink where the water can drain, or outside.

Ideal temperature - To keep the poinsettia in bloom for as long as possible maintain a temperature of 65 - 75 degrees F˚ during the day. How to Prevent Freeze and Frost Damage to Your Trees and Plants

What to do during periods of Frost and Freeze conditions

Normal winter time conditions in and around our lower desert areas include a few nights when temperatures may reach below freezing (32F) at official weather reporting stations (http://www.weather.gov/). In outlying and lower lying areas, actual temperatures may be even lower. During an abnormally cold period, temperatures can reach into the lower twenties or even colder. Temperatures below freezing can cause damage to certain varieties of trees and shrubs that are commonly grown in the area.

How Frost Can Damage Your Plants

Frost damage is caused by moisture condensing on the leaf and forming ice crystals by drawing water from the plant. This dehydrates the plant and is why frost damage looks like a burn. Because many trees and plants become casualties during freezes, every effort should be made protect vulnerable plants to minimize winter damage.

Some trees and plants that are affected include, but are not limited to: Ficus Species, Jacaranda, Palo Brea, Pygmy Date Palms, Sissoo, Young Citrus, Bougainvillea, Lantana, Hibiscus, Thevitia and other varieties. If you have questions on the hardiness of your plants or how cold your particular area gets, please call your closest Moon Valley Nursery at 602-938-6666. Smaller and newly planted trees and shrubs tend to be the most susceptible to damage from cold weather. All trees and plants can benefit from the following measures to help prevent damage from frost and freezing conditions.

1. WATER
As weird as it may sound, the laws of thermodynamics prove that it is more difficult to cool humid air than dry air, so be sure to thoroughly water all of your trees and plants during periods of forecast frost or freeze. In addition, get your entire yard wet in the evening before forecast freeze. This boosts humidity in the immediate microclimate and will help minimize the effects of frost and freeze on your trees and plants

2. COVER
Where feasible, cover plants with a frost cloth or old blankets during nights of forecast freeze. It is important that you cover up before dusk. By the time it gets dark much of the stored heat in the garden has already been lost. Remove cover in the morning to allow radiant heat to be absorbed. DO NOT USE PLASTIC. Plastic actually increases the danger. For larger trees and plants, you can apply Frost Proof insulating spray. This applies a thin layer of wax-like substance that minimizes evaporation from the leaves, thus minimizing frost/ freeze damage. 3. HEAT
People have had success in preventing frost/ freeze damage by stringing up Christmas lights in their trees. The older style lights (incandescent) provide the best warming effect. Sometimes it's only a few degrees that will make a huge difference. Although these methods are proven to minimize the effects of abnormally cold weather on trees and plants, due to the uncontrollable nature of weather, there are no guarantees of success.

Grandiose, inspiring and breathtaking only break the surface when used to describe the Gardens of Versailles. Versailles is the most famous garden in the world. Yet 'garden' is scarcely a fitting designation. The scale is monumental and there is little sense of enclosure. It is resplendent as the prime example of the French Baroque style.

There are immaculate parterres, great basins, an orangery, vast collections of outdoor sculptures and some of the grandest fountains which have ever been made.

The park and garden were designed by Andre Le Nôtre between 1661 and 1700. The Grand Trianon, another formal garden, was built on the site of a former village. Avenues project from Louis XIV's palace towards distant horizons, enfolding town, palace, garden and forest. The Grand Trianon, a formal garden on the property was built on the site of a The Petit Trianon was given to Marie-Antoinette in 1774. She favored the irregular style, with hills, rocks and streams. Dutch Baroque Gardens at Het Loo Palace

The ‘Great Garden’ lies privately behind the Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. The garden was designed by Claude Desgotz the protégé of Le Notre most famously noted for the gardens of Versailles. The Het Loo garden maintains the perfect symmetry, axial layout with radiating gravel walks, parterres with fountains, basins and statues that are a signature of Baroque style.

Symmetrical gardens are usually considered formal gardens. This type of garden features symmetrical plantings placed uniformly throughout the garden. Each fall the Southwest is marked by a massive migration of birds. More than 350 species of birds leave for a little R&R in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Central and South Americas. These tiny winged creatures travel thousands of miles to their winter retreats to breed and rear their young. It’s hard to imagine the crisp air of fall without the sounds and drama of our migratory birds.
Some have names many of us recognize - the ruby-throated hummingbird, chimney swift, purple martin, gray catbird, wood thrush and northern oriole. Others may be familiar to the more serious birdwatchers - the ruddy turnstone, yellow-bellied cuckoo, common nighthawk, yellow bellied flycatcher, scarlet tanager, bobolink, red-eyed vireo and Cape May warbler. Collectively, these birds are known as “neotropical migrants because they nest in Canada and the United States, and winter in Mexico and points south” (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).

Features of Desert Plants and Trees

About 20% of the Earth’s land surface is considered desert. The Sonoran Desert is characterized with abundant plant life. Desert plants thrive in this area which on average only gets 7 inches a rainfall a year. One of the main reasons is because of their adaptability to their surroundings.

Features of Desert Plants

Low Water
Desert plant survival depends on being able to exist little rainfall. These are commonly referred to as low-water-plants and trees or drought resistant plants and trees. Plants cope with little to no rain during the dry months by going dormant or using stored moisture within the plant itself.
Small or No Leaves
Moisture evaporates through leaves. Leaves are used for photosynthesis, turning sunlight into energy for the plant to grow. Desert trees like Palo Verde, Iron Wood and Mesquite have very small leaves to reduce water escaping while still allowing photosynthesis. In contrast Cacti don't have leaves at all. The pads of the cacti replace the leaves for converting sunlight.

Thorns
Many desert plants have needles, stickers and thorns. Since the plants store moisture inside themselves, they require some sort of protection against animals, in order to survive. Thorns are the protection.
Ability to Quickly Absorb Water
When it rains, desert plants must be able to absorb the water quickly before it runs off or evaporates. Plants will cluster around streams and creeks to absorb any underground moisture that may be available even when the creek is dry.
Metabolism

Many plants lose hundreds of gallons of water each year through their stomata, a loss that desert plants cannot afford. While other adaptations limit water loss, plants must open their stomata sometimes to obtain the carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis, or they will starve. Many desert species use a special kind of photosynthesis called the C-4 pathway. During this process, carbon dioxide produced during respiration is recycled within the plant and used for photosynthesis, allowing the plant to keep its stomata closed.

What’s biting you? Coping with No-See-Ums

During the summer months many of us have to cope with no-see-ums. They are small biting flies that are barely visible to the naked eye, but their bites can be very painful and annoying. They are also known as biting midges or punkies. Some mistake their bites as flea bites or chiggers. For us that spend a lot of time in our gardens, no-see-um(s) bites can be a daily occurrence.

The no-see-um species found in Arizona and the southwest are of the genus Culicoides (family Ceratopogonidae). Adults are less than 1/16-inch long which means they can easily pass through normal window screens. They are most active in early mornings and evenings of mid to late summer. So August is prime time for these little pests. Mouth parts are well developed with elongated mandibles adapted for blood sucking. Both males and females feed on flower nectar but only the female feeds on blood. She must consume blood for her eggs to mature and become viable.

No-see-um eggs are laid on moist soil. Common breeding areas include the edges of springs, streams and ponds, muddy and swampy areas, tree holes, and even water associated with air conditioning units. University of Arizona Entomologist, Carl Olson, says they also breed in moist disturbed soil such as that found around construction sites or freshly plowed ground. The eggs hatch in as little as 3 days. The worm like larvae have short brush like breathing structures that allows them to breathe in an aquatic environment. Although larvae are not strictly aquatic or terrestrial, they can not develop without moisture. After feeding on decomposing organic matter and pupating, adults emerge, feed, and mate.

Bites of these tiny flies are painful and irritating. The bite usually starts as a small red welt or water-filled blister that itches. Once scratched, the welt can break open and bleed, but the itching usually continues. The best strategy to prevent no-see-um bites is to wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, shoes and socks, and a hat during times when no-see-ums are most active. While sometimes mistaken for a mosquito, No-see-ums do not spread West Nile virus. However, their bite can be painful and precautions should be taken.

ANATOMY OF A TREE

There are virtually thousands of varieties of trees in various shapes, sizes and structures, but they all have the same basic structure. Like humans, trees have a fundamental anatomy and each part has its specific task to ensure good health to the tree.

The central column of all tress is the trunk. The trunk is composed of many layers. The bark covered trunk supports a framework of branches and twigs. Branches are attached to a tree by interlocking branch and trunk tissue. Branches located on the interior of a shade tree that do not get enough light, will eventually die and fall off. Leaves are attached to branches. Leaves on every branch must produce enough food to feed itself.

Tools you will need:

Understanding the Monsoon

Monsoon is one of the most spectacular and dramatic events in the region. It brings a dazzling light show, strong forceful winds, and walls of dust often followed by abrupt copious rainfall. The desert region gladly accepts the summer rain; however, the monsoon can be catastrophic to your trees, if certain precautions are not taken. The first step begins with understanding the monsoon season.

The Science Behind the Monsoon

The summer monsoon begins in mid June and continues until the end of September. What causes this change in the weather? “The summer monsoon consists of winds from the Sea of Cortez flowing inland to fill the partial vacuum created by rising continental air warmed by the summer air. These winds bring moisture from the Pacific off of Baja California to move into the desert region. The westward moving winds actually circle around the area and reach the Sonoran Desert as southeasternly winds”.

The science of the monsoon corresponds to the original meaning of the word “monsoon”. Derived from an Arabic word for; season. Damage Caused by Monsoon

Appreciating the strong wind shift that characterizes the monsoon can help us understand the potential damage this season can bring. The National Weather Service has proclaimed this Monsoon Safety Awareness Week. Safety begins at home. Most injuries during the monsoon are caused by flying or falling debris. The most likely danger is trees and branches falling. You will be able to minimize damage to your trees by making sure they are staked properly.

Staking a Tree

1. Use two stakes per tree.

2. Place the stakes outside the root ball at right angles to the direction of the heaviest wind.

3. In order to determine where to place the ties connecting the trunk to the stakes, loosely hold the base of the trunk with one hand allowing the canopy to bend to the side. Find the lowest point on the trunk at which the canopy can return to an upright position without stress after being bent to the side. Place ties six inches above this point. Attach the ties so that the line between the trunk and the stake is parallel to the ground.

4. Use strong wire for ties. Protect the trunk by putting the wire through garden hose. The garden hose should be just long enough to loop around the trunk. Twist wires to keep the garden hose from migrating.

Fasten wires to stake and twist to tighten. Wire should have sufficient slack to allow the trunk and garden hose to move as a unit.

5. Cut off the stakes below the lowest limbs of the canopy. It is very important to prevent limbs from rubbing against stakes.

“Inspect and loosen wires periodically as the tree grows. Support should be removed from the tree within one year after planting. It has been reported that growth is actually reduced if the supports are left in place for longer periods of time”. Arizona Master Gardener; University of Arizona

We are now in the Monsoon season. The four characteristics that define the Monsoon are; lightning, wind, dust and rain. Each brings with it a specific precaution that you should take to avoid damage to your yard and to yourself. Monsoon proof your yard today by following these recommendations.

Lightning: Lightning strikes trees because they reach into the sky, providing a pathway for positive charges from the ground to lead toward the negative ions contained in thunderclouds. The best thing that you can do is stay indoors during a monsoon storm. Stay away from windows and doors.

Wind: Winds during the monsoon can reach up to 50-60 mph. Staking young or vulnerable trees will greatly assist you in preserving your trees.

How to stake a tree:

The name Haboob is rooted from the Arabic word "phenomena". These walls of dust last about three hours. Transfer the belongings stored in your yard to a store room inside the house. Rain: The average rain fall during the monsoon (June, July, August) is 2.45 inches. The wettest monsoon on record was in 1984 when 9.38 inches fell. Some Like It Hot!

Except Your Plants

There are two seasons in the Southwest: perfect and really hot. According to the National Weather Service the average temperature in the southwest during the summer is between 103° and 116°. During these extreme temperatures your trees and plants need special attention and protection.

Why, because a plant's temperature usually runs just above air temperature, or higher depending on surrounding factors, such as walls, pavement and asphalt. Like the human body plants “sweat” through a process called transpiration or water loss through the leaves. Simply put, the more evaporation or sweating a plant does the more water it needs. However, watering during the summer is not the only concern.

Using the analogy of the human body again, when the body is under stress it is more likely to be more susceptible to infections and diseases. Extreme temperatures cause trees and plants stress.

An extensive study conducted by The University of Nevada, reports that a single day of extreme heat exposure to flowering plants may be fatal to the reproductive, or gametophytic phase of the plant. A stressed tree or plant is also vulnerable to insects. Like our bodies, the healthier it is the stronger it will be able to fight off potentially deadly invaders.
In order to survive the summer heat, your plants need to “drink” plenty of water; “eat” the right foods; and “wear” the right clothes.

A pH or potential of Hydrogen means the measurement that reveals if a solution is acidic or alkaline. When thinking of acidic, think of lemons and for alkaline think of the slimy feeling of bleach.
A near-neutral or slightly acidic soil is generally considered ideal for most plants. Most soils in the southwest according to The Master Gardner Guide, published by The University of Arizona are alkaline and have a pH of between 7 and 8.5. Wear the Right Clothes: During the peak of summer, it would be ineffective and downright silly to keep cool by wearing your winter coat. Fundraiser for Officer Travis Murphy's Family

Officer Travis Murphy was killed in the line of duty on May 26, 2010. He leaves behind a wife and two small children ages 2 years and 2 months. Officer Murphy also leaves behind a whole department of officers who “respected and will greatly miss him”. According to Chief Jack Harris "He absolutely loved his job and loved our department," The loss is felt throughout the community.

Moon Valley Nursery is holding a fundraiser to help the family of Officer Travis Murphy. The prize will be donated by Moon Valley Nursery and 100% proceeds will be given to help Officer Murphy’s family.

At the time of taking office as an Officer and Public Servant Officer Travis Murphy stated the following Arizona Oath of Office:

“I, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of Arizona, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office… according to the best of my ability, so help me God” ARS 38-231

Officer Travis Murphy was the personification of that oath. Over the past four years Officer Murphy faithfully upheld his honor and integrity as he protected our community. His dignity and respect was shown professionally and personally as he upheld his oath of office. On May 26, 2010 Officer Murphy was shot and killed in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and two small children ages 2 years and 2 weeks.

As the community that Officer Travis Murphy protected we have a collective responsibility to care for Officer Murphy’s family with the same passion and conviction he embodied. Moon Valley Nursery invites you to share in that responsibility.

Designing your Landscaping

Landscape design has a distinct vocabulary. Many of the terms have deep roots in history, art and politics. So the next time someone says “ha-ha,” to you, is it jovial fun or is it………….? See terms below.

Landscape Architectural Terms:

Allee- Straight path in a garden, often lined with trees

Arcadia-The classical idealized landscape, usually with nymphs and swains. It is the pagan equivalent to Paradise.

Bosque- Small woody area or clump of trees, usually some distance, designed as an ornamental backdrop.

Built environment- The part of the world we live in that wasn’t given to us by nature.

City Beautiful Movement- The belief promulgated in the 1890s that a beautiful and majestic urban environment would create a better society with an improved moral climate.

Conservatory- A decorative greenhouse as an architectural feature in a garden.

Espalier- The sculpture training of a tree or vine, making artificial what is natural.

Ha-ha- A ditch used as a wall or fence between tracts of land that is hidden from view.

Hortus deliciarum- Latin for “garden of delights.

Neo-Classical – The style era between Rococo and the Romantic.

Softscape- The greener parts of the landscape design, requiring more watering, weeding and mowing.

Xeriscape- The use of gravel in place of grass to obviate constant watering.

Zen garden- A particular Japanese garden style, usually found in Zen Buddhist temples, often made from only raked white sand and boulders, creating a “mindscape” meant to aid in meditation.

THREE TREES YOU MUST HAVE THIS SUMMER!

“In summer, the song sings itself”. Summer in Arizona brings sunsets with uncontested beauty, clear nights adorned with stars that leave no room for the parsimonious imagination and the aroma of the desert trees in bloom during the summer is in itself ineluctable. All of these senses are no further than your backyard. Summer ushers forth the season to plant an endless variety of desert trees. Native desert trees will transition your backyard from the “forgettable ordinary” to the “memorable extraordinary”. The three trees you MUST have to complete your summer are:

Foothill Palo Verde Tree

The foothill palo verde tree attributes its name to the trees greenish branches and trunk. Palo verde is Spanish for green wood or stick, which aptly describes this native tree. Foothill palo verdes can reach up to about 20 feet in height. When in bloom these trees will grace your property with a distinct five petaled yellow and white flower. As you admire a grouping of these trees during the flowering season they have the appearance of the illusive city of gold. You will have a lifetime to enjoy their beauty, because foothill palo verde trees often live well over a hundred years and have been known to live past the fourth century mark. Foothill palo verde trees are an essential addition to your landscape, and will harmonize with the surrounding desert landscape for centuries to come.

Blue Palo Verde Tree

A common accompaniment to the foothill palo verde, is its close relative the blue palo verde. Its botanist name is Cercidium floridum. Floridum refers to the trees abundant flowers. Blue palo verdes are fast growers and can easily top out at 40 feet in height. Pruning your blue palo verde will reveal the natural sculpture of its trunk that would rival Auguste Rodin. The blue palo verde also plays host or nursery to other native cacti, providing shade in the summer and protection during the winter. Blue palo verde trees are a must have this summer as you sit outside and absorb the quite summer nights.

Palo Brea Tree

Another native tree must have this summer is the palo brea. Sometimes it is called a Sonoran palo verde. One characteristic of this tree is its wide, open and spreading crown, making it ideal for summer shade. The twisted contortions of its trunk makes you feel like you have a front row seat at the cirque du soleil. The palo brea is drought-tolerant, like the foothill and blue palo verde. All three are perfect native trees for xeriscapes and low desert gardens. The palo brea tree is a must have this summer as you relax and enjoy its architectural uniqueness.

Decrease Your Energy Costs This Summer

On March 11, 2010 the SRP Board of Directors concluded a public process by approving an overall 4.9 percent price increase effective May 2010. For most SRP customers this increase will begin appearing during the April billing cycle. This rate hike would be the largest increase since SRP hiked rates by 12.8 percent in April 1981 and only a mere 2 years apart from the 3.9 percent that went into effect May 2008. One way to counteract utility rate increases is to design the landscape surrounding your home with the objective of conserving energy.

Thoughtful and careful landscape design can actually reduce your air-conditioning costs by as much as 15 percent or more according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Windows account for as much as 50 percent of the load placed on a typical air-conditioning system, so by shading windows with plants and trees this can effectively lower your energy bills. When selecting trees to maximize shade, trees with broad crowns and dense foliage provide the greatest shade. Strategic placement of shade trees within your landscape plan is crucial in optimizing their potential.

Placing shade trees along the west side of your property and in front of windows will be the most effective. Shade trees reduce solar heat gain by transferring the active heat-absorbing surface from an inert building envelope (like your house) to living foliage. Because the heat capacity of leaves is low, most of this energy is transferred to the surrounding air. Water in the leaves evaporate and will actually lower the air temperature. Planting shade tress along the west side of your home and in front of windows will transform what was once an inefficient, energy wasteful area into a cost effective, conservator of energy.
