The Benefits of Mulch

  • ·         Use when planting trees and shrubs
  • ·         Great for gardens
  • ·         Top dress for grass seed

One of the most important materials for your garden or landscape is mulch. Mulch is material used to cover the surface of the soil. The best type of mulch for your garden, trees, shrubs, flower beds or lawn is an all organic blend like Moon Valley Nursery’s Premium Planting Mulch. As organic mulches age, they break down, which adds nutrients to the soil.

         Benefits from mulching:

Keeps soil temperature constant

   Reduces weeds

 Efficient watering

A good layer of mulch helps keep the soil’s temperature constant; it serves as a blanket to maintain even soil temperature. So your trees or plants do not get to hot or cold. It also reduces weed germination by preventing light from reaching seeds on the surface. It makes watering more efficient by reducing moisture loss through evaporation and reduces erosion from heavy rainfall, like the monsoons.

·         Defines your flower beds
·         Protects trees

Mulch can help give definition to your flowerbeds. When used around trees, it will help to prevent mower blight, which is bumping the tree trunk with the mower, which can damage the tree. Mulch can also give your landscape a finished and refined look.

How and when to apply mulch:

Mulch should typically be applied in a 2” to 3” layer. More is not better, because it is important for air to circulate. Mulch should never be applied around the base of the tree, excessive moisture can cause rot. Mulch can be added any time of the year. Add a layer of mulch to any new tree, shrub or flowers.
